Nidra

performance|VideoArt

Alessandro Grisendi | Marco Noviello | Giacomo Baldelli

Nidra, a 60-minute sensory immersion, blends the mastery of the electric guitar with the visual charm of video, creating a performance that serves as a multisensory meditation on the subtle dichotomy between internal and external, conscious and unconscious, dream, and reality. This journey through art begins with a prologue, a space dedicated to the presentation of new pieces or premieres, creating an atmosphere of anticipation and discovery that precedes the main show

The concept of “Nidra” evolved through the creativity of OOOPStudio, transforming the experience into a collection of short films, adding an additional sensory and visual layer to the performance. To amplify the emotional impact of the show, we adopted a unique approach integrating analog and digital techniques. Specifically, analog techniques, such as the application of paints, were used to create visually striking effects in harmony with the performed music. Paints could be manipulated and layered to visually reflect and interpret the musical textures, providing the audience with a synesthetic experience where sound seamlessly merges with visual aesthetics. Another intriguing element is the use of ferrofluid, a magnetic fluid composed of iron nanoparticles. This material reacts to magnetic forces, generating fluid and dynamic movements, creating evolving visual effects synchronized with the music, contributing to making the multisensory experience of “Nidra” even more engaging. Simultaneously, the inclusion of images filtered through cathode-ray tube televisions adds a retro and suggestive element to the presentation. The juxtaposition of vintage technologies with modern musical execution creates an atmosphere that blends the past and present in a harmonious visual and auditory experience.

The combined use of these analog and digital techniques aims to transform the spectator into an active participant, engaged not only by Giacomo Baldelli’s electrifying music but also by an innovative visual framework. The synergy between sound, color, movement, and texture creates a complete experience that goes beyond the conventional boundaries of musical performances, offering the audience a profound immersion in the fusion of visual and auditory art in “Nidra”.

The selection of works performed during “Nidra” forms a true symphony of masterpieces. Among them, the iconic “Electric Counterpoint” by Steve Reich stands out, a composition that intricately weaves the threads of the electric guitar, creating an intriguing dialogue between the musician and the recorded. The evocative “Vampyr!” by Tristan Murail adds an element of mystery and enchantment, immersing the audience in a unique sound world. “Trash TV Trance” by Fausto Romitelli speaks for contemporary aesthetics, transporting spectators to unexplored sonic territories. The program continues with “Another Possibility” by Christian Wolff, a work that challenges the boundaries of musical tradition, opening the door to new sonic perspectives. An original transcription of John Cage’s “Dream” adds a touch of experimentation and visionary quality to the repertoire, taking the audience on a journey through the composer’s mind. The creative talent behind this extraordinary proposal is the guitarist Giacomo Baldelli, a musician who, with his technical skill and emotional depth, guides the audience through a unique experience.

The New York Times has described Nidra as an authentic “tour de force” in the contemporary music landscape for electric guitar and video. This praise underscores the complexity and beauty of a performance that, beyond musical mastery, captures the audience’s attention through the interaction of sound and vision. The fusion of visual and sonic elements creates an engaging experience, transporting spectators to a world where art manifests in multiple forms.

Nidra is not just a show; it is a profound journey through the nuances of contemporary sonic and visual art. The ability to transport the audience into emotional and conceptual dimensions makes this performance unique, leaving an indelible mark in the memory of those fortunate enough to attend. Nidra is a work that goes beyond mere entertainment, offering a transformative experience that elevates music and visual art to a higher form, capable of transcending conventional boundaries and opening new expressive horizons.
